First of all, don't be fooled by the amount of calcium a supplement claims to contain.

*Calcium citrate -This calcium supplement is acidic in nature and can easily be absorbed by the body.

This calcium supplement can be taken anytime of the day, as it does not need any extra stomach acid for easy absorption. This calcium supplement, however, provides you with less elemental calcium. This means you may need to take more pills to absorb more calcium, depending on your dietary needs.

*Calcium carbonate - this calcium supplement provides the most elemental calcium. Its alkaline nature, however, means that you need extra stomach acids in order to help you absorb the calcium.

This is best taken after a meal, when you have the extra stomach acids required to dissolve the calcium supplement properly.

One technique you can use in taking this calcium supplement is by taking it with a glass of orange juice or some other acidic beverage.

*Coral Calcium - one of those advertised "miracle cures", this calcium supplement was said to have the ability to cure a variety of diseases. It is also claimed to be the secret to a very long life.

Studies have shown, however, that coral calcium is no more than calcium carbonate. The claims have been questioned and the claimants have also faced prosecution from the government.

These just goes to show you how dangerous some cure-alls can be.
