There's nothing fishy here really, but we'll try to talk about fish and the benefits we may have from their oils.
Many research assert that fish oil is our new cure to the ails of the modern man. It is said to render efficient protection against the damages of our highly industrialized environment.
Somewhere in our history people have found good use of the oil derived from cold-water fishes in curing arthritis. However, it only got its fame back during the 1980's. Nevertheless, like the diet fads that sprouted during this age, fish oil lost its revered place in medical science and was left consequently as archives among the bulk of medical literature.
And its current revival has proved that it is only time that hindered the discovery of a cure all. Already, considerable studies have testified to the potentials of fish oil for the medical community.
So we must eat lots of fish right?
Wrong. Actually, studies suggest that our consumption of fish oil do not necessary correlate with the amount of fish, such as tuna and salmon we eat. Our fish oil intake is largely dependent on its pharmaceutical-grade version that the body derives from the DHA and EPA content of the fish. Or simply, we can't receive the sufficient amount of fish oil by eating mackerel or tuna even though we eat them on a daily basis.
Eating a fish salad or any food that is fish-based would not be enough to accommodate our body's high demand for DHA and EPA. We require high dosages of fish oil and in concentrated forms. Well, good thing manufacturers have discovered means of creating fish oil supplements.
But what are DHA and EPA?
Well, these are actually the major omega-3 fatty acids that we can derive from fish oil. DHA stands for docosahexaenoic acid while EPA means eicosapentaenoic acid. We would not want you to get tangled with medical jargon so let us just maintain our focus on the fundamentals of these substances.
EPA, as we have earlier noted falls into the omega-3 family. It is a complex polyunsaturated fatty acid that we may get from fish oils as well as in the fish themselves. Eicosapentaenoic acid is prostaglandin's parent compound that suppresses the inflammatory disorders that were stimulated by other prostaglandins. This in effect puts balance on excessive meat consumption. Thus, we can conclude that EPA can help lessen the aggravation of heart disease.
Docosahexaenoic acid, on the other hand, is said to help in the reduction of blood triglycerides. Now you have the best of both worlds.
But wait. It would pay good if you would examine the fish oil supplements that you would buy. With all the hype that is plaguing the market nowadays, we have no absolute assurance that what we are buying would work great for us. Beware but don't be too discriminating. There are still quite a number of self-respecting manufacturers that would deliver to you what they have initially promised.
