The popularity of health supplements is just one indication of how health-conscious people are becoming.

Some health supplements claim the most absurd things in order to get ahead in the market. In this world where competition is a main feature of business, some people will say anything; promise everything in order to get your money.

Here are some popular myths about health supplements:

1. Only the young and the pregnant need them -many adults refuse to take health supplements on the grounds that they think health supplements should only be taken by pregnant women or young people who consume much energy and minerals in their day-today living.

This is not true. All people may be eating poor diets or taking in fewer nutrients than they ought to.

We all need to stick to a certain dietary allowance in order for us to be at our best health.

Health supplements can help us achieve that optimum condition by providing our bodies with the enough energy and nutrients we need.

2. You get all the nutrients you need from food -this is also a myth. Although some people do get all their nutrient needs based on their recommended dietary allowance (RDA), there are still many people who do not eat right and therefore do not get properly nourished.

The variety of foods we eat also means that no one actually eats the same thing and gets the same nourishment everyday. This means that not all people get the same nourishment everyday.

Health supplements can help even out your nutrient consumption by making sure that you do get enough vitamins and minerals everyday.

There are also some nutrients that can't really be gotten easily from the foods you eat. These are readily available in health supplements though.

3. You get everything you need from health supplements -not true. There are lots of people, especially dieters, who reduce what they eat and replace food with health supplements.

No matter how good a health supplement claims to be, you can never use it to replace food.

The fact is that there are certain components of good old-fashioned food that health supplements just cannot replace.

4. You only need to take health supplements for a while - some people believe that they only need to take health supplements for a short while, making it into a quick fix foe an illness.

This is not true, however. Health supplements, in order to be effective, need to be taken daily. Your body needs a constant supply of nutrients in order to remain healthy. Remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

5. Some health supplements will not work properly with others -this myth is actually partly true. Taking too many kinds of health supplements do affect your consumption of the minerals and nutrients they contain.

While no supplement really "cancels out" the effects of another, taking in too many different kinds can prevent you from properly absorbing each and every nutrient.

This is due to the fact that they do compete for intestinal space. They can't al be absorbed at once, and so some may not be absorbed at all.
